Electricity

One of the concerns people have when they come to Suriname is about the voltage available in the country. Several web sites say that Suriname has 126 volt current. Naturally they wonder if they should bring line conditioners for their electric tools.

You will have no trouble with the electricity in Suriname. All of your power tools will work fine here. The power supplied by the EBS is actually a 120 volt current. Suriname has some of the best electricity available in South America. This is due to the long-standing power needs of SURALCO (the Suriname owned aluminum corporation). Large levels of quality electrical power are required to process ore into aluminum. ALCOA made sure that the country is well supplied with dependable electricity.

We use American made appliances everyday with no problems. Missionaries have done so for decades. The only thing you will need are 90 cent adapters that are available everywhere in Suriname. You can rest assured that your tools will work properly and without damage in Suriname.

Note: if you are bringing a laptop computer you will want to bring along a line conditioner. "Brown-outs" are more common here than in the States.
