Mosquitoes
Yes, there are mosquitoes in Suriname. But probably not any
more than you'd find in Minnesota during the summertime. The
difference of course is that the Suriname mosquitoes can carry
malaria or dengue fever.
However, unless you are planning on traveling into the interior
of Suriname for an extended period of time, there is very little
chance that you will get either of these diseases. Travelers
to Paramaribo will be in town where the government sprays regularly
for mosquitoes. Malaria isn't a problem in town.
For your own comfort you will want to bring mosquito repellent.
Deepwoods Off works well here. Look at the label--the more DEET,
the better. Vape-mats are also commonly used in town along with
mosquito coils to ward off the pests at night. Our mission has
five mosquito nets that you may use. But it can be hot sleeping
under a net.
You will want to bring a small portable electric fan. A 6"
fan should be sufficient. Small fans discourage mosquitoes and
help you rest easier at night! Please bring along a small extension
cord with your fan.
The best solution is to sleep under mosquito nets with a portable
fan running to keep you cool at night. Check with your local
Army Surplus store to see if they have mosquito nets for sale.
Mosquito nets can be purchased in Paramaribo if you are unable
to find them in the States.
