PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Strange error message.
When opening some documents, the following incomprehensible error message appears: "This value must be between 1 and 999. The closest allowable value will be used. [303]"

The problem was narrowed down to the Quark CMS (Colour Management System). When the CMS feature was turned off in Preferences, the error message went away.

QuarkXpress template bug.
Opening a QuarkXpress 6.x template file will open a new untitled document as expected, but closing that new document will not prompt a save dialog box. Strangely, if you open a QuarkXpress 4.x template file (within QuarkXpress 6.x) and close it, it WILL prompt you for a save, as expected!

Hanging when exporting PDF.
When exporting a PDF, a progress bar appears, completes, and closes. But QuarkXpress hangs for several seconds after that, and the spinning beachball appears. This happens whether exporting a PDF through QuarkXpress's built-in Jaws engine, or exporting a postscript file.

I'm not certain if this is a problem with QuarkXpress or the Mac OS, but it should be noted that this problem does not occur when saving a PDF or postscript file from any other application.

Missing default path.
There are several default paths available to be set in Preferences, but one important path is missing: a default path for exporting PDFs. This would be very useful when repeatedly exporting postscript files to Acrobat Distiller's "watched folder".

Interface bug in Usage panel.
Page-Up and Page-Down keys do not work in Usage panels if nothing is selected. Also, if you happen to select an item using the arrow keys, the Page keys STILL will not work. Version 4.x did not have this behaviour.

You must explicitly select an item with the mouse in order for the Page keys to work.

Save problem.
When opening and closing certain documents, QuarkXpress will ask whether to save the file, even though nothing was changed. If that file is then saved and re-opened, the problem still persists.
