PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Can't hold down Tab key when switching apps
Holding down the Tab key after typing Command-Tab will not cycle through the icons in the Dock. However, if you use Keyboard Access to open the Dock, holding down the Tab key will cycle through the icons. This behaviour seems inconsistent.

No solution found.

Update (Feb. 10, 05): Newer versions of OS X have fixed this problem. Holding down tab now works in the Application Switcher (that appears temporarily when typing Command-Tab) as well as the Dock.

Can't copy contents of Text Clippings
If you make a Text Clipping by dragging some text onto the Finder, you used to be able to copy its contents in OS 9. In OS X, you can't.

No solution found.

Workaround: You can use third party applications to edit, copy, and manage text clippings. Try ClipEdit (shareware) or ClipIt (freeware).

Update (Feb. 10, 05): Newer versions of OS X have sort of fixed this... you can now copy the entire contents of a clipping, but you can't select portions of the text.

What are OS X's new shortcuts?
For no apparent reason, Command-N now makes new Finder windows rather than new folders.

This Applecare document lists most of the shortcuts, including start-up keys.

Internet Explorer loses its settings
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the system (or another application, such as Outlook Express) will override Internet Explorer's settings (browser colour, fonts, etc.). Strangely, IE doesn't store its settings in its own preferences file, but rather, uses Apple's Internet Config preference file.

Make sure you quit all other applications, set your settings in IE as you want them, and then quit IE. Select the file "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" (user/library/preferences/), get info on it, and then lock the file. Your IE settings will now stay as you want them. If you need to change your internet config settings later, just unlock the file.
