Civil Service Preparation Class
Queens High School students are fortunate to have a Civil Service
Preparation Course available to them. This course was developed by
the QHSO Transition Team and coordinated by Rosa Smith-Norman, Borough
Work-Study Coordinator.
The Civil Service Preparation Class was designed to address the needs
of students in an Instructional Support Services/Special Education Program.
As identified in their transition plan, students have expressed an interest
in developing the skills needed to acquire a civil service position.
This course was designed specifically to serve the following purposes:

Acquaint applicants with the step-by-step approach to getting a job.

Assist students in choosing realistic career paths.

Coach students with sample tests required by various jobs.

Introduce students to the civil service websites (e.g. www.coms)

Prepare applicants to do their best on examinations by practicing test-taking
strategies and techniques in a classroom setting.

Review the various job hunting resources available (e.g. DOE, DOL, The
Chief, etc.)

Provide information about the experience and training requirements for
civil service jobs.
Students learn how to read and answer want ads in various newspapers,
identify skills needed for getting and keeping a job, complete job applications,
prepare a resume, role-play the interview process, research various civil
service positions, access information through the Internet, and visit the
New York State Department of Labor Web Site.
