Sisson
Lake |
Resting
in the saddle between Shastina and Shasta is tiny Sisson Lake, named
for an early pioneering personality in the area. This wind blasted
saddle is the jumping off point to either turn north up Shastina's
south rim, or south to attempt two route variations including the
upper Whitney glacier on Shasta. From the saddle up to the south
rim is only about 650 feet of elevation gain, but as you pass 12,000
feet you may be feeling the thin air slow your steps, and the talus
slope is unrelentingly loose and shifting under foot in this area
if you are not climbing with crampons on consolidated snow fields.
