Crater

From
near the summit block the rolling ridges of Shastina's shattered
rim and the large crater plug offer evidence of the turbulent volcanic
history which built these mountains. Shastina and Shasta are stratovolcanos,
but Shastina offers much more visual evidence of its volcanic origins
compared to its larger sister Shasta. The gaping hole in the main
crater wall to the east where Diller Canyon cuts its way down the
west slopes of Shastina and the corresponding undulating lands below
toward Weed, California bear evidence to the huge scale of volcanic
events the geological history of these mountains has whitnessed. |
