East
Rim |
As
you begin the final ascent of Shastina's summit ridge line, you
are afforded a sweeping view of the complex crater formations which
tail off down and toward the west and Diller Canyon. In the heart
of the crater rises a blackened rock plug which signifies the ancient
main volcanic chimney. Below the plug you can sometimes see Clarence
King Lake, a teal green tarn which only appears from the previous
season's snow pack when warm late summer sun exposes the normally
frozen waters. If you still have energy to explore after reaching
this area, the remote rim and crater offer plenty of places to visit. |
