RT has initiated free bike and ride service on certain runs of the SH and 12 bus lines as it strives to add environmentally-friendly convenience to the services it already provides. Combining bike riding with RT bus service allows you to avoid congested freeways, save money on gasoline, and reduce air pollution while enjoying the benefits of exercise through cycling. And best of all, there's no additional cost!

Bike & Ride Passes

To use RT Bike & Ride service, you must obtain a free pass from our office. Please make an appointment first (442-0826). You will be required to bring your bike to the appointment, where you will receive instruction on loading and unloading it. You will not be issued a pass if you cannot demonstrate your ability and knowledge of loading and unloading your bike. You must also sign a waiver which exonerates RT from liability to damage or loss of your bicycle.

Loading

  1. Remove all items from your bicycle that might interfere with securing it on the rack, could obstruct the bus operator's view, or fly off the bike.
  2. When the bus comes to a complete stop, inform the operator that you will be loading your bike and give him or her your pass. You will not be able to use Bike and Ride service if you do not have your pass.
  3. Do not step into oncoming traffic to load your bike.
  4. Squeeze the metallic handle and lift up to release the latch, then fold down the bike rack.
  5. Lift your bike onto the rack, fitting wheels into proper wheel slots.
  6. Raise the securing arm over the front tire. Do not lock your bike to the rack.
  7. Enter the bus and pay your fare, and your pass will be returned to you.

Unloading

  1. Before the bus reaches your stop, tell the operator that you'll be unloading your bicycle. Exit through the front door of the bus.
  2. Do not step into oncoming traffic to unload your bike.
  3. Make eye contact with the operator before stepping in front of the bus to unload your bike.
  4. Raise the securing arm off the tire.
  5. Carefully lift your bike off the rack toward the curbside. If there are no other passengers using the bike rack, return it to its original secured position.
  6. Move away from the bus and signal the operator when you are completely clear.
