We all have dreams and Langston Hughes shared his vision with us through his poetry.  Your assignment is to search on an online database to discover three poems by Hughes that inspire or help discover your dreams.  After you have picked your three poems, you will write a comparison paper.  In that paper, you need to: 

  1. Explain each poem--what does the poem mean to you
  2. Compare the poems to each other--what is alike and what is different
  3. Explain how each poem touched your life
  4. Remember to document where you got your poems from
Directions to search online database:
  1. Log on to http://www.nclive.org
  2. Click on monitor for subject
  3. Under subject access, click "Full Text Resources"
  4. Under "Full Text Resources", click on "African-American Poetry via Chadwyck-Healey (the first one for poems 1750-1900
  5. Click on Twentieth Century African-American Poetry
  6. In the keywords box  type "dreams"
  7. In the author box type "Hughes, Langston"
  8. Click submit search box that is located above the keywords box
  9. Scroll down and read a variety of poetry before you pick your three.
  10. Happy reading--remember poetry should be read aloud

3.2  Use electronic resources for research--This goal is met because students must search for poem that interest them

3.3  Select and use technological tools for class assignments, projects, and presentations--This goal is met because students must use the internet and word processing to complete this assignment

3.4  Adhere to Fair Use and Multimedia Copyright Guidelines, citing sources of copyrighted materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations--This goal is met because students must document where they got their poems from..

North Carolina Standard Course of Study:

1.02 Reflect and respond expressively to texts so that the audience will:

  • investigate connections between life and literature.
  • explore how the student’s life experiences influence his or her response to the selection.
  • recognize how the responses of others may be different.
  • articulate insightful connections between life and literature.
  • consider cultural or historical significance.

This goal is met because students must respond to the text and use their experiences to pick three poems.  Students must also consider Hughes life and society at the times he wrote his poems.
