The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools offer access to the Internet to students, teachers, and staff. The Internet, an electronic highway, connects thousands of computers, computer networks and individual subscribers around the world, and offers information and resources previously unavailable to our schools.

Internet Access Includes:

  1. Information, news, and resources from businesses, libraries, educational institutions, government agencies, research institutions, and a variety of other sources.

  2. Telecommunications with individuals and groups around the world.

Instructional Goals;

  1. To support the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and school improvement plans.

  2. To enhance learning opportunities by focusing on information retrieval, searching strategies, research skills, and critical thinking.

  3. To promote life-long learning.

The Internet provides access to computer systems located all over the world. Users (and parents of users, if the user is under 18 years old) must understand that the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools cannot control the content of the information available. Some of the information is controversial and, sometimes, offensive. However the valuable information and interaction accessible on this worldwide network far outweigh the possibility that users may find inappropriate material. The Nash-Rocky Mount School System does not condone the use of such materials and takes all reasonable precautions to filter access to these materials. Within reason, freedom of speech and access to information will be honored. School employees, students and parents must be aware that access to the Internet will be withdrawn from users who do not use Internet access for the purposes stated above, who do not respect the rights of others, or who do not follow the rules and regulations established by their school and/or the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools.

ACCEPT ABLE USE

Internet access will be used in a responsible, efficient, ethical and legal manner and must be in support of the educational objectives, of the student behavior guidelines, and the staff professional standards of the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools. Transmission of any material in violation of any federal or state regulation is prohibited. Unacceptable uses include, but are not limited to the following:

  1.  Violating copyright laws.

  2. Forwarding personal communications without the author's prior consent.

  3. Using threatening or obscene material.

  4. Distributing material protected by trade secret.

  5. Utilizing the Internet for commercial purposes.

  6. Providing political or campaign information.

"NETIQUETTE" RULES

Users must abide by network etiquette rules. These rules include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Be polite; rudeness is never acceptable.

  2. Use appropriate language; do not swear, use vulgarities or other abusive or inappropriate language.

  3. Do not reveal personal addresses or phone numbers.

  4. Do not disrupt the use of the network.

  5. Assume that all communications and information via the Internet is private property

Privileges: The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use will result in limitation or cancellation of user privileges.

Disclaimer: The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools will not be responsible for any damages suffered, including loss of data resulting from delays, non-deliveries, service interruptions, or inaccurate information. The user accepts personal responsibility for any information obtained from the Internet.

Security: Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users.  Attempts to login to the system as any other user or to share a password will result in cancellation of user privileges. If you identify a security problem, you must notify the system administrators (the media specialists) at your school. Do not demonstrate the problem to others.

Vandalism: Vandalism will result in cancellation of user privileges. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy equipn1ent and/or data of anyone connected to the Internet. This includes, but is not limited to uploading, creating, or transmitting computer viruses.

Parent Permission: The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools Board of Education believes that the benefits to students from access to the Internet exceed any disadvantages; however it supports and respects each family's right to decide whether or not to apply for access. Therefore, each student must have an Internet User Permission Form completed and signed by the student and his or her parents prior to being provided with any individual access to the Internet.
