Quite the oxymoron, 'The
Land of Water', but As-Kartel's inhabitants are as unlikely as its nickname.
A large island to the West of the Continent, in 16 A.F. it was decided
that As-Kartel could be accepted as the fourth country in the Continent.
In the waters surrounding
the island, the Kriechen Sea, live the Myrr People. They look very much
like the merpeople in the Overworld stories--fins, brightly colored scales,
and human upper bodies. Only their eyes are slitted like a cat's, with
vertical pupils. Their irises are mainly yellow, and sometimes red. Their
teeth are pointed like a pyrhana's. Their nails are like the points of
the lionfish, poinsoness and scathing. They are agressive, and unpredictable,
the hunters of the sea in their areas. They secrete a bubble of mucus
to cover themselves when they sleep, like the parrotfish. They can mimic
voices using one of their three vocal chords, which is probably what was
once mistaken for the beautiful singing of the Sirens. All in all, a livley
bunch.
When you reach the shore,
the beaches are inhabited by seven-foot high spiral shells. These are
the homes of the Conchiglians, the Shell-hunters. They hunt in groups
as well. They are merely humanoid, but devoted to the crab--catching of,
hunting of. They use the larger shells as their shelter, and the meat
as their food. They are moody and as unpredictable as the Myrr People.
They have an odd attribute though--they are exceptionally strong. They
have developed a way to use their muscles as the crab does its pincers,
which is useful for opening the shell of one, to get at the soft meat
inside. The women stay in groups near the shells, and in the evenings
the whole tribe stays close together, reveling in the company of others.
Higher, there are many
sharp cliffs that draw the abuse of the ocean storms, and the lightning
of the hurricaines. The Aguillon live in the nooks of the cliffs that
have been worn away. They are very secretive people, and do not stay out
long in the day. They do not like to be observed, but like to do the observing--note
the strategic cliff positioning. Another of their attributes--amazing
strategy. The Aguillon are always planning and thinking ahead. They can
win their way through the toughest situation, coming out as what appears
to be 'on top'. They are not very well described, however. They mask their
dealings from their island, and when a few make it off they separate their
denomenation from their identity, masking themselves if you will. What
researchers can gather, however, they are a winsome bunch, able to please
if the situation calls for it. Do not interrupt their homes, though. They
need their time apart. It seems that these groups use long whips with
nails at the end, as if they were stingers. It is how they hunt.
