Arnold and Alice, 24 July 1918.

Arnold Sando and Alice Dowdy were original soldier settlers at Monash in the Riverland region of South Australia.

Their block, number 437, consisted of 24 acres of land between what is now Highway 64 and the Distillery road. The house was on one quarter acre of land on the south side of Distillery road. A separate dry block (non irrigated) of 24 acres located between Monash and Berri was never developed.

The land was cleared of trees and drains installed in preparation for planting. Initially grapes, oranges, walnuts and apricots were planted. Lucerne was planted to feed the horses.

The Sando family left Monash in 1980.
