Research Papers - Critiqued

Throughout the course, all the students were exposed to different research papers and asked to critique those papers. Following are the research papers summary and its critique.

Research Paper # 1
Rapid Development for Distributed Computing, With Implication for the Virtual Observatory

This paper discusses the gap between the grid and distributed computing and what can be achieved by advanced research groups and what is realized by typical scientists on the desktop. Following is the research paper and the critique.

Research Paper # 2
Enhancing Human-Machine Interactions: Virtual Interface Alteration through Wearable Computers

Research Paper Summary and Critique

Summary
This paper studies a novel approach advocating the virtual alteration of real-world interfaces through a form of augmented reality. It's make the case for using wearable computers to enhance the interactions between humans and conventional appliances. Preliminary results suggest that virtually altering the interface of real world devices improves execution times for simple tasks using these devices. It's shows that virtual alteration of current interfaces can improve users' performance while necessitating less conscious perceptual (i.e. visual search) and cognitive work.

This research paper was given in the mid term exam and can be downloaded from the following web site. Note that the ACM user account is required to download the research paper.

Research Paper: Enhancing Human-Machine Interactions: Virtual Interface Alteration through Wearable Computers

Critique
The author clearly states the hypothesis in the abtsract. He also provided a solid introduction to many terminology used in the paper. The method is clearly defined in the paper and well explained. The relationship between different variable in the research is also explained nicely. Although, graphs are not present in the papers, but images are provided which are well labelled and supporting the underline hypothesis. Its also provide data in a grid form which is not much but support the result. The finding of the research support the idea of enhancing human-machine interaction performance. The conclusion is open-ended since there are lot of areas in the research finding which require more in depth research and exploration. For example, the need to improve detection algorithm to support more interface components, text recognition algorithms etc.
