FUNAKOSHI GICHIN SENSEI AND TRAINING THE OLD WAY!

It was once asked if Funakoshi sensei practiced Nagawasa?

The answer was yes, but it has been a very long time since this was part of normal day to day training. You can find but a few Ryu's that still practice Nagawasa.

Basically Funakoshi Sensei only taught 9 basic 'nage'

But sensei did insist that all nage technique's be taught with your Kata in mind, these technique's are as follows:

1) UDEWA
(to encircle with the arm)
2) BYOBUDAOSHI
(to topple a folding screen)
3) KOMANAGE
(spinning top)
4) KATAWAGURUMA
(half wheel)
5) TSUBAMEGA
(V-turning swallow)
6) TANIOTOSHI
(to push off a cliff)
7) YARIDAMA
(to spear a ball)
8) KUBIWA
(toencircle the neck)
9) SAKATSUCHI
(to hammer upside down)

WHAT TO DO WITH OUR TRAINING IN THIS NEW YEAR

Now that the new year is well  and truly upon us we should be thinking how this is to affect our future training. Will we be happy in just turning up for 'another session because it's somewhere to go or do we take it more seriously and think what are we trying to achieve with our training?

Hopefully some of you will be thinking the latter.

I know Keith and myself take our personal training very seriously and I think if my calculations are correct we have between us some 57 YEARS of Bushido. This is a very long time to dedicate your lives to the way of Martial Arts, but time passes quickly and you have but one life to live and such a short time to achieve your goal.
