President Bush should stop listening to his "experts" and follow his own instincts. He articulated a clear position when he launched the war on terrorism. Any nation that supports or harbors terrorists will be subject to the same treatment as terrorists themselves. Yasser Arafat and the ruling Palestinian Authority meet that definition.

The United States should stop trying to discourage Israel from fighting Palestinian terrorism. We are in the same war against the same enemy.—Linda Chavez

Instrument of Surrender

We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, hereby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States, China and Great Britain on 26 July 1945, of Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers.

We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated.

We hereby command all Japanese forces wherever situated and the Japanese people to cease hostilities forthwith, to preserve and save from damage all ships, aircraft, and military and civil property and to comply with all requirements which may be imposed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by agencies of the Japanese Government of his direction.

We hereby command the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters to issue at once orders to the Commanders of all Japanese forces and all forces under Japanese control wherever situated to surrender unconditionally themselves and all forces under their control.

We hereby command all civil, military and naval officials to obey and enforce all proclamations, orders and directives deemed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be proper to effectuate this surrender and issued by him or under his authority and we direct all such officials to remain at their posts and to continue to perform their non-combatant duties unless specifically relieved by him or under his authority.

We hereby undertake for the Emperor, the Japanese Government and their successors to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration in good faith, and to issue whatever orders and take whatever action may be required by the Supreme Commander for the allied Powers or by any other designated representative of the Allied Powers for the purpose of giving effect to that Declaration.

We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters at once to liberate all allied prisoners of war and civilian internees now under Japanese control and to provide for their protection, care, maintenance and immediate transportation to places as directed.

There was just one reason why Germany and Japan surrendered and that is because the war effort by the Allies was fiercely prosecuted until there was a total surrender. How many cries from the press and the pacifists were heard in the spring of 1945 when victory over the Axis was imminent? Were there calls for a truce before total victory? Witness some of the action a few months before Japan's surrender:

On the night of March 9-10, 1945, 300 American bombers devastated Tokyo, killing 100,000 people.

The largest air raid of the Pacific War was launched on May 23rd with 520 B-29s dropping napalm on Tokyo.

On May 25th, another 500 B29s leveled Tokyo. These two raids destroyed 56 square miles of the Japanese capital.

On August 6, 1945 the first A-bomb dropped—on Hiroshima—killed about 90,000 Japanese.

Three days later, the second nuke killed about 40,000 more Japanese in Nagasaki.

It wasn't much different in Germany where we napalmed Dresden (little military significance—tens of thousands of German citizens burned) and Hitler blew his head off only when the Russian and American troops kept pressing forward. We didn't take a siesta back then, gauge opinion polls, or worry about our standing in the world's popularity contest. We pressed forward until there was total victory over the enemy. Civilians died and we broke the back of the enemy. Today, the Germans and Japanese are our friends. Had the war dragged on while peace overtures were tried a hundred times, maybe they would not be our friends today. How long would the war have lasted if "peace initiatives" we held every other week?

The fighting has been going on in Israel since 1948 because the enemy has never been totally defeated and the Arabs refuse to formally agree to Israel's right to exist. It is foolish to think any peace plan will work under these conditions.

When war is fought like a computer game and you attempt to be neat and tidy and clean and keep it sanitized, and when you throw a punch and then let the enemy catch his wind, then you never do force total surrender. Collateral damage was not much of a concern by General Patton and others. The concern was for a total defeat of the enemy. And when the war ended, it ended. Unlike 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1998, 2002,. . . it was just August 6th and 9th, 1945. Boom! It was over. None of this encore crap that Israel is going through.

If Israel ever wants peace for its citizens, then they need to eradicate an enemy that is more concerned about Israel's destruction than squatters rights over a notch of land. Only fools think a land grab will solve this problem. It is the failure to clearly define what this war is all about—too many shades of gray in a black and white issue. Both bin Laden's war and Arafat's war is a war against a people. It is war against Jews and Americans. Islamic children are raised since birth to be miniature "Terminators" with a one-track mind to kill Jews and Americans. The difference between World War II and the current war is the United States today is worried about its beauty pageant status and its current rating in the world popularity contest. Israel would do well to ignore this just as Truman ignored this in 1945.

It shameful for the United States to ask Israel to pull back forces that are attempting to destroy the terrorist network that has killed so many Israeli citizens. With a two-faced policy like this (while we prosecute our own war on terror, rightfully so), President Bush should retract his statement "either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

That statement looked great in black and white, Mr. President. We just did not know there would be so many shades of gray.
