The president lied about his financial dealings in Arkansas. Lied about his draft evasion. Lied about his endless sexual misconduct. Lied about his other life experiences.

He lied about his policies. He lied about the impact of his policies. He lied to a grand jury. He lied to a federal judge. He lied to Congress. He lied to the American people. And he lied to his family. —Columnist Doug Bandow on Bill Clinton

Part II Legacy Lies: Employment (January, 2001)

President Reagan's 8 years Had Better Employment Growth Than Clinton's

In Part I, we examined GDP and saw how Clinton entered his Presidency in a growing economy. That nice angle of ascent we had in late 1992 in GDP? Well, it became an angle of descent in late 2000. (Read Part I).

1996 election? Clinton gets elected again comparing his economy to the Bush years as the incredible stupidity of the general public reared its ugly head.

Impeachment, 1998? Clinton gets a free pass in part because of GDP strength, i.e., the economy, by the clueless masses and the liberal press. You all heard that man in the street say "leave the man alone, I am making ten bucks more a week than I was four years ago. So what if he committed multiple felonies." If you didn't hear that, the spineless Senators sure did as they gave a wink to Bill Clinton for keeping their lame brained constituents happy.

Election 2000? Al Gore...well, you know, all the "we must not go back to the stone age" lectures.

Today? The Clinton legacy was never discussed, not even once, (to use Al Gore phraseology) by the press without bringing up the economy.

Part I debunked the GDP myth.

So what about all these new jobs, the 22 million new workers Clinton crows about? For starters, another Clinton lie. Try 19 million. Just like Gore tried to manufacture votes out of no votes, Clinton creates workers out of non-workers to the tune of about 3 million strong. Birds of a feather.

So are these 3 million phantom workers paying taxes?

Here is the raw reality: In January of 1992, there were 117,027,000 employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics official numbers. In December of 2000, there were 136,092,000, for an increase of 19,065,000, 3 million short of Clinton's fabrications. As the chart shows, this is an increase of 16.29%. Slick not only does not know what the definition of the word "is" is, but he must not know the definition of the word worker either.

You know that black hole that, the liberals say, sucked all the workers into oblivion during the Reagan years? The truth is there was an increase of 18.18% during the Reagan years in total employment versus Clinton's gain of 16.29%. In January of 1981, we had 98,139,000 employed. By December of 1988, there were 115,978,000. The nearly 18 million more workers is less than Clinton's gains, but it is the percentage gain which is more important. The population grows also, right?

Not only was American pride restored under Reagan, but we had a terrific economy. The employment gains shown here outpaced the Clinton years. Yes, that's right Dan, Tom, and Peter.

What's more, the eight years of Jimmy Carter/Ronald Reagan (through first term) had an even bigger percentage gain of 20.21%.

As the chart shows, the final four years of Reagan and the Bush years produced the smallest percentage gain of the four periods of 14.04%. There was some massive corporate restructuring during the late 80s and early 90s that helped set the stage for today's economy. This is when corporate America initiated the productivity improvements, through technology, that reaped benefits during the Clinton years. It did cost jobs, though, as companies got lean and mean by replacing some workers with new technology. But the economy, and job opportunities today, are far better because of this. No pain, no gain.

We also had a recession and the Gulf War that hurt the economy during this period. The liberals do not know what the term business cycle means, and they certainly do not believe in the free enterprise system, so we will not get into that here. But the short of it is, cycles happen.

What the Clinton spinners found out, and used to great advantage, was that you just throw out lies and false facts repeatedly and they become etched in stone. Investigative journalism was no where to be found. The press corps acted like an army of press secretaries for Bill, Al, and Hillary.

So as Bill Clinton shamelessly gave his farewell speech—oops, make that his pat myself on the back while I tell you once more how I saved the country speech—he once again mentioned his two anchors of self pride. With GDP growth, it was a lie. With employment, it ranked third out of four, as shown here.

What a charming last three days in office. The continuing lies about the economy in his Thursday speech. The corrupt deal to save his skin Friday. And pardoning more crooks that covered for him on Saturday.

Such a fitting finale that was. Sort of has a poetic ring to it.

We would all like to say good riddance, I am glad it is over. But with the new Clinton house near by and his cronies flooding the airwaves,

the stench will linger for many a more day

as new whiffs of deceit keep blowing our way.
