Pencak Silat

Pencak Silat is the martial art practiced by indigenous Malays of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Draussalam.  There are many different forms of Pencak Silat with approximately 500 different styles in Malaysia and another 800 different forms in Indonesia.  All different styles have some comparable characteristics with another but each has its own distinctive features.  This originated from the differences in location where the martial art developed and the differences in the physical attributes of the people practicing it.  Different styles also developed from movements of animals; Harimau “Tiger style” Silat mimics the actions of tiger, Undukayam Silat focuses on actions of the hen scratching the ground, Monyet “Monkey style” Silat follows the movements of the monkey.

Pencak Silat places special emphasis on the positioning and movements of the Pesilats.  They are always moving around, looking for an opening or weak point to deliver the striking blow.  Pencak Silat makes full use of elbows and knees to deliver strikes and sweeps.  Grappling techniques such as take-downs and locks are also incorporated, making it a very well-rounded martial art.
