Wushu

Wushu translates into “martial technique” and encompasses all forms of Chinese Martial Arts.  It has evolved from thousands of years from the battlefield to the competition floor.  A standardized system of Wushu was created in the 1960s to promote health and to insure that traditions and culture would be preserved.  This system is now called Modern Wushu and this is what NUS Wushu is famous for.

Basics are the alpha and omega of Wushu.  With daily practice, it increases the body’s agility, flexibility and power.  Wushu is well known not only for its martial ability but also for the ability to increase the health of the practitioner, thereby rendering him/her to be less susceptible to illness and disease.

The standardized competition routines come next.  Balance and control can be learnt through the practice of these routines; the complement of long flowing movements with short explosive movements creates this artistic dimension characteristic of Wushu.  This conditioning allows practitioners to exude an aura of beauty and grace that is present not only during the practice of Wushu but also during the going about of daily chores.
