The Russian State Protection Service was created in January 2008. Conceived by Ilya Stepanovich Georgiev and several key members of the Sate Duma, the RGZS was created to protect Russian interests around the world. This includes protection from terrorist attacks, protection of information both physical and electronic, protection of classified material, and the protection of the Russian people both at home and abroad. Intelligence and counter-intelligence operations are also a vital part of the agency. For situations where military-style assaults are needed the agency will have two ‘fire teams’ at its disposal, both tasked to RGZS exclusively. The agency will also comprise of various other operatives such as intelligence officers and analysis specialists, and reports to the SVR Chairman and Georgiev.
