Our "major" programs require students to take three elective classes (30 credits) in their chosen field. Students may choose from the following areas. Communications Technology Science Fine Arts Human Services Kinesiology 1. Communications - A broad discipline concerned with the exchange of messages, for individuals and in group settings, and the impact of such exchanges on society. Courses focus on understanding the general areas of communication are available for study: media and organizational. Career choices related to communication could include: customer service, lawyer, speech writer, personnel, public relations, small business manager, press secretary, news director, marketing manager, TV and radio station worker. Courses offered for the 1999-2000 school year are: *Future Scenarios *Intermediate Computers *Commercial Art/Graphics *Creative Writing *Power of Poetry *Literature and Film *Public Speaking *Reader’s Theatre *Psychology 1,2 *Theatre 1,2,3,Advanced Theatre *Technical Communications *Script Writing *Photography 1,2 *Photo Advanced *Research for Success *Writer’s Workshop *Reader’s workshop A,B *Animation and Multimedia *Exploring Culture Through Literature *World Languages 1,2,3,4 *Web Design & Development *Empowerment Skills for Young Adults 2. Technology - The following fundamental concepts of computers will be covered: computation and programming; history and principles of computing; problem solving; input, output; data representation, storage, and file organization; computer hardware, networking and data communication; social, economic and ethical implications; computer; hardware, networking and data communication; social, economic and ethical implications; computer security and privacy. Students will solve problems using the BASIC programming language and moving through to other types of programming. Careers could include: management information specialist, technical representative, teleprocessing coordinator, scientific application programmer, computer services coordinator, systems engineer, control specialist, data communication manager and many more. Courses for the 1999-2000 school year are: *Future Scenarios *Accounting *Animation & Multimedia *C Programming *Design in Surroundings *Engineering A,B,C1,C2 *Intermediate Computers *Lab Specialist *Play Production 1 & 2 *Research for Success *Visual Basic Programming *Web Design 3. Science - This field of study is geared towards students who are interested in a career in science. The sciences include: Biological, astronomy, chemistry, environmental studies, forensics, gerontology, health and safety studies, physical, psychology, anthropology and physics. As students articulate their needs and desires, additional classes will be developed to fit these needs. Courses for the 1999-2000 school year include: *Future Scenarios *Basic Programming *C Programming *Calculus *Chemistry *Ecology *Engineering A,B,C1,C2 *Investigations in Scientific Methods *Lab Specialist *Micro Biology *Research for Success *Science in the Media *Physics *Physiology *Pre-Calculus *Statistics *Visual Basic Programming *Web Design & Development *Word Processing 4. Fine Arts - This major is of special interest to students who have a broad range of abilities. Careers include: art historian, artist, art dealer, cartoonist, illustrator, jewelry design, package designer, photographer, printmaker, layout designer, actor, director, lightning designer, scenic designer, playwright, theatre manager, critic, announcer, recreation specialist, teacher, composer, music librarian, accompanist, music director, entertainment facility manager, TV, movies, radio jobs, and many more. Courses for the 1999-2000 school year include: *Advanced Theater *Art 1,2,3 *AP Art *Beginning Band *Ceramics 1,2 *AP Ceramics *Children’s Theater *Commercial Art Graphics *Intermediate Band *Concert Choir *Design in our Surroundings *Piano Lab *Drama Production 1,2 *Guitar Workshop *Music Theory *Jazz Band *Modern Jazz Dance 1,2 *Vocal Ensemble *Photography 1,2,Advanced *Dance Composition & Performance *ROP: Visual Communications and Graphic Portfolio *Web Design & Development 5. Human Services - One of the largest and most varied occupational area within our economy. Human services has a variety of employment opportunities, such as sports, culinary activities, child care and education, interior design, government service jobs, information services. Human services major is unique in that it requires knowledge and skills that are used by all people in their daily lives. Courses for the 1999-2000 year include: *Ability Awareness 1,2 *Cultural Studies *Psychology 1,2,& AP *State & Local Government *Technical Communications *You and the Law *Leadership Development *Intermediate Computers *Introduction to Political Studies *Public Speaking *Student Leadership *Theatre 1,2,3,& Advanced *World Languages 1,2,3 *Children’s Theatre *Literature and Film *Power of Poetry *Research for Success *Empowerment Skills *Accounting 6. Kinesiology - This major will offer a variety of classes ranging in the areas of science, math, physical education, officiating, first aid, and CPR. Students in their senior year will also be required to run an intramural sports program at Smedberg Middle School for work experience. Each class will be offered as a nine-week unit; therefore the classes will be grouped together to complete the eighteen-week session schedule. Students involved in Athletic Physical Education (9 week class) will be required to take an elective class in the area or the 10th grade curriculum. This major currently includes 30 units.
