Antony
Peebles was educated at Westminster Sxchool and - with an exhibition in
music - at Trinity College Cambridge. After gaining his MusB there he
studied piano with Peter Katin, receiving scholarships from various
sources. He has also studied with Yvonne Lefebure (on a French Government
scholarship) and Jeremy Siepmann.
In 1971 he won the BBC
Piano Competition with a unanimous vote from the jury. Vlado Perlemuter,
serving on the jury, announced that he had never heard Gaspard de la nuit
played better. In the following year Mr Peebles won the Debussy
Competition in France.
Since then he has
maintained a very busy performing career. The main feature of this has
been the remarkable amount of overseas touring it has entailed: Mr Peebles
has now performed in, astonishingly, 124 different countries. The most
recent additions to the list have been Uganda, Tunis, China, US Virgin
Islands, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
At home in the UK he has
played as concerto soloist with the following orchestras: London Symphony,
Royal Philharmonic, Halle, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool
Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Welsh Symphony, City of London
Sinfonia, etc..He brodcasts on BBC Radio 3 and plays for music clubs up
and down the country.
He
has recorded 5 CDs for Meridian Records. These involve a CD of Ravel Piano
music, a CD of Liszt transcriptions and fantasias based mostly on various
operas, and 3 CDs of Schubert songs transcribed by Liszt. Mr Peebles is
currently recording all 55 of the Schubert songs that Liszt transcribed
for solo piano. The first of these Schubert CDs was voted 3rd Best
Recording of the Month by 'Classic CD' Magazine. (The 3rd volume has not
been released yet.)
