When the legendary Chilean
pianist, Claudio Arrau, heard Ronald Farren-Price play in London as a
young man, he gave him a personal scholarship, thus beginning years of
study under Arrau’s guidance and a lifelong friendship with the great
artist.
Ronald Farren-Price is
among the finest performers Australia has produced. He has performed both
in recital and as concerto soloist in the major concert halls of over
forty countries. Among his noted appearances are those at Queen Elizabeth
Hall London, Carnegie Recital Hall New York, Tchaikovsky Hall Moscow,
Philharmonic Hall Leningrad, Musikhalle Hamburg, Brahmssaal Vienna and
Teatro Colon Buenos Aries.
He was a pioneer in
bringing Australian performance to China, where he was invited in 1986 and
1988 to give recitals and master-classes in Beijing and other cities and
to South-East Asia, including Vietnam where he gave recitals in the Hanoi
Opera House. He is an Honorary Professor of the Tianjin Conservatory of
Music.
His unique success as an
Australian instrumentalist has been his numerous tours of the former USSR.
In St Petersburg he is affectionately known as the Australian Richter and
has even been mobbed by enthusiastic rose-carrying audiences after some
recitals. His last tour there, just prior to the breaking apart of the
Soviet Union, was his eleventh and most extensive tour beginning on the
eastern coast and culminating with a concert in Moscow’s Bolshoisalle.
In addition to his career
as a concert pianist, Ronald Farren-Price is Associate Professor and Head
of Keyboard in the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne. His
experience as an examiner both here and aboard is vast. He began examining
for the Australian Music Examination Board 38 years ago and is known for
his encouraging and friendly style. He was Federal Examiner for Australia
during the 1980’s and has been appointed to that role for 1994-5.
He has performed as a
concerto soloist in New Zealand. In 1992, Ronald Farren-Price gave
concerts in Italy and Spain and performed within Australia. In 1993 apart
from concerts in Victoria and interstate, he gave concerts and taught in
Cyprus and Scandinavia.
Ronald Farren-Price was
awarded the Order of Australia for services to music.
