Alice went as far as to join them on the bed, but the Monsters bounced off frantically at unnatural angles and disappeared. However, under one of the pillows, Alice found a note. It said:
Suddenly and without warning, the bedclothes rose up like a violent sea and swallowed up the New Alice.
Alice regained consciousness to find herself in a partially invisible birdcage suspended naked above a yawning abyss. A wraithlike creature hovered high above her and then slowly descended. The spectre stopped descending when it reached her. It bobbed gently in the air. It could not speak, but the random forms in the rocky wall spoke for it. It told Alice that she had arrived on The Island of the Valley of the Monsters during the monsters’ final, suicidal, apocalyptic battle with the super-intelligent crinoids from a distant universe. It suggested that the flaming monstrosity had been a message from one of the aliens. Whatever was holding up the birdcage suddenly snapped and Alice plummeted like a stone grapefruit into the bowels of the earth.
