While living in Boston, he became acquainted with Madison Taylor and was shocked to find her living at Belleterre when he returned home. The two are infatuated with each other, but both are too stubborn to admit anything to each other. Robert won a good deal of money from Madison in Boston, but she always insisted he cheated. When they met up again, she demanded a rematch. He threw the game and allowed her to win her money back. They later shared one drunken night together after Madison had unwittingly professed her love for him. She tried to forget the night, and further insulted him by accepting Jack's proposal. He left for Boston and she followed him, but he rejected her. They soon reconciled when he found out she had miscarried their child, but was unable to convince her not to go to her aunt's in Paris.
