THE SLUDGE REPORT No 6

The honeymoon is over for the Sooke Municipal Council

That was made very clear at the inaugural meeting of WRATH in the Sooke Community Hall April 19 when 78 residents showed up to lambast the council on a variety of issues ranging from their decision to pay themselves almost twice that recommended by the incorporation committee to the mayor reneging on a promise to hold a referendum on the sewer issue to what many speakers described as the "arrogant" and "rude" attitude of the council towards citizens who try to make representations to this august body.

WRATH Public Meeting

The meeting had been called to present WRATH's case in opposition to the council's grant application and while those present were in agreement that the council was tying to move too far too fast on sewers many oher issues were raised.

[WRATH has submitted a sewer system counter proposal to the grant review committee. Click here to view the executive summary.]

Speaker after speaker said they felt they were treated with contempt every time they stood up to oppose any council initiative.

The turnout at the meeting exceeded WRATH's wildest expectations - a maximum of 40 people were expected, instead 78 showed up. Many enthusiastically paid $5 memberships to join WRATH and others made more sizeable donations to build up a warchest for the fight ahead.

Also present were two Sooke councillors -- John and Marcus Farmer, who sat in the front row with scowls on their faces throughout the meeting.

The Farmers

It is a sad thing that our community has been reduced to a "we and them" situation with the councillors being regarded as the enemy but they have brought it upon themselves with their bizarre "our way or the highway" behaviour.

We though the CRD was bad, this crowd is 10 times worse!

The Farmers will take a very serious message back to their fellow councillors - this council is in serious trouble with the electorate because of it ineptitude in dealing with people and its failure to follow the democratic process.
