Henry's occupation: Farmer. Henry Farmer Chandler was a land owner at age 18 and established his large holdings in Reed Creek by 1835. He was a successful planter and operated a private ferry from his estate in Ga to SC across the Tugaloo River. He was active in the Reed Creek Baptist Church and in 1854 he composed seven hymns which were included in "The Social Harp", a hymnal published by his neighbor John McCurry. Prior to the Civil War Henry owned at least 16 slaves but only one was a male adult so he and his five sons were active in the farming operation. All five of Henry's sons served in the CSA with Morgan Farmer Chandler being mortally wounded in battle. In 1875 Henry sold the bulk of his plantation to his son Asa D. S. and probably moved to his daughter Sarah Teasley's home in Lavonia, Ga. where he died of cancer in 1877. From the 1860 Hart Co,Ga census we know that Henry, a widower, married " Mary D."- no other details known. It is believed that Mary died prior to 1875. The Chandler home built in 1835-59 was continually occupied until 1958 when the Army Corp of Engineers acquired the property to make way for Lake Hartwell. The family cemetery was moved to nearby Reed Creek Bapt. Church where Henry, his wife Fannie, his daughter Nancy and 39 others not identified lie at rest.
