Cretans have much to be proud of. The Minoan Period of Crete's history, from 2600 to 1400 B.C.E. represented the first great flowering of European civilization. This is best demonstrated by the art and frescoes discovered among the impressive palace remains at Knossos.

Crete, the largest island, was unified with Greece in 1913, after nearly two millennia of continually resisted foreign subjugation by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Turks.

As with any city, town, village throughout Greece, there is a tremendous history of resistance to oppression and faith in the Orthodox religion, and the evidence of such is plainly seen.

Here, byzantine icons are on display, having been buried during times of war in order to ensure their survival.
Of course, trips to any place are not all about sightseeing. My trip to Crete was fun-filled as you can see from the photos below. I met one of my closest friends there as we drank ourselves into a stupor night after night.
