Tinos
The Holy Island of the Cyclades. The island of Tinos is the site of the Church of Euaggelistria (Virgin Mary). In this church there is a miraculous icon of the Annunciation, which thousands of Orthodox christians come to pay their homage to every summer around the feast day of August 15th.
For years I have witnessed on Greek television, the pilgrimage of Greeks flocking to the island for the August 15 feast day. It is believed to be the day of miracles; a day that prayers will be answered. Thousands disembark the ferries in the port and start up the hill to the church on their hands and knees, to demonstrate the upmost respect, and sacrifice to the Virgin Mary, while all the while praying and asking forgiveness. Many prayers have been answered, and so-called miracles are said to have occurred. It is a mystical phenomenon, but nonetheless draws Greeks from all over the world.

It is for this same reason that I came to Tinos, driven by a desire somewhat foreign to me. While I cannot explain it in words, I can say simply that I had to do it, and indeed feel more complete having done so.
