Shogun- James Clavell
The year is 1600. The English ship pilot Blackthorne is caught in a storm and brings his Dutch ship Erassus into a harbor of Nippon, having never seen a Japanese person and the Land of the Gods being the stuff of sea legends. As quickly as he can, the ambitious "barbarian" begins to learn the nearly-incomprehensible language and beautiful alien customs to find his way back to his ship and to sea. His best route to freedom is to befriend and aid the Lord Toronaga in his own rise to power. A fantastic saga of passion, honor, danger, and power, the bold Blackthorne, the hungry Toronaga, and the torn Lady Mariko, a japanese Catholic convert struggling with two ways of life.
I could not put this book down, it is entirely absorbing. The cast is enormous, with feuding lords, fearless samauri, lovely ladies, servants, and priests, each wanting something in his own way and trying to figure out the world and how they might best use each other to the best advantage.
Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card
Ender Wiggin is not your typical six-year-old. He has been bred for genius and trained in the arts of war in a battle school, playing involved games of strategy while the teachers play games with him. Ender finds that he is the great hope of the military, and is the hope of the masses for saving the planet from the next invasion of the buggers. Meanwhile, his genius sister and brother are playing games of their own...
This book was great fun- it did not take me long to read at all as I could not put it down!
