Goal 2010 It's October 16 2009, the night wind
is still and traffic along Orchard Rd has come to has standstill. Car
horns are blaring and no one actually is driving. Young men are
standing on their cars, fathers carrying kids on their shoulders,
girls are taking their tops off. The noise is deafening and the
island is covered in a sea of red and white. WE DID IT !!! Singapore
has qualified for world cup in 2010 in South Africa....everyone has
gone berserk. Well rewind the tape. Can we do it? Will
scenes of unbridled joy so often seen in Paris, Rio and Istanbul
ever visit our shores? Maybe. Maybe not. But it's game on and there
is no turning back. There is a lot of work still to be done. There
is also, I must add no where near the kind of belief required to
pull off the damn thing. The skeptics are having a field day and
justifiably so. The FAS is still a poorly run organization
cursed with an unfair amount of internal squabbling and politics. Grassroots
efforts are not paying off and there is even talk off importing
foreign talent to accomplish the feat. The focus is missing and the
finger pointing, plentiful. A worrying fact is the players who,
between the ages of 16-20 now are displaying an indifference that is
shocking. Everyone is doing all they can to help the country get
into World Cup finals and yet these players are lazy and not
quite bothered. The Lion City Cup team though
physically superior to previous years teams , still do not possess
the amount of technical skill and mental capacity required to become
world class exponents of the game. We feel a football academy needs to
be set up. The best footballers upwards of age 14 will have to be
pulled out from schools and pulled into the football academy. Students
will be encouraged to live on location. They will have training in
the morning from 7-9.Short break ,shower and a meal before classes
from 10-12.30 .Lunch rest till 2 .Followed by more classes till 5
and then training in the evening. This ensures a regimented program for
studies and football whereby a balance can be achieved. Far too often
when a player concentrates on schoolwork, his studies suffer and
vice versa. This system hopefully will correct the imbalance. A point on foreign imports. We point
to the French and its use of imports.Bullshit they are French
citizens of immigrant parents. They were schooled in the French system. If
they poached talent straight off then Why isn't Algeria (Zidane's
background0 or Guadeloupe (Thuram) footballing powers? Think again
before we pick. Finally getting on the world stage
will be immense. With a huge global audience everyone will know a
little bit more about Singapore. I remember as a boy pulling out the
atlas to find out where Cameroon was and looking up the capital of Paraguay. Football
has that much power to educate. My European geography is based
around European football leagues and not textbooks. So Just
imagine....... |
