A lot has happened over the past year. I have been neglectful in keeping this site up to date. So I’m writing this to bring everything up to speed. Not sure were to start to I’ll probably seem like I’m rambling. Bear with me. For those of you who know me, you are used to it. I’ve had a couple of major injuries that have taken me away from the training and racing I’m used to. I’ve moved my Massage Therapy practice twice within the last year. Hopefully I wont be moving again. I’ve been doing some writing for other web sites that are more focused on single parenting issues. And of course I’ve been spending a lot of my time with Sage! She has been growing like a weed, and acting like one at times… ok so I’ll do a little update on each aspect of these changes.

After tearing my left achillies tendon in June of 2004 I managed to get through the rest of the season. Once I took some time at the end of the season it came back to haunt me. It’s ok… but, just ok. It doesn’t hurt, but it gets tight after certain workouts. I can run, bike, swim and even do weights. But it tightens up and changes my gait for awhile afterwards. This has also caused some issues for me affecting my knee. Remember the song, the foot bone is connected to the shin bone, the shin bone is connected to the knee bone, etc, etc…. This is one of those times when that is a reminder of good body mechanics. As of today, I am able to do the things I want and not have any serious affects. I just think it may be an issue for me as I will have a, “tight” achilles…

By June of 2005 I was feeling pretty good with my fitness. I had been able to get in some regular training and it was starting to show. At the last minute I decided to do the Fanshawe Lake Off Road Triathlon. I am really glad I did! It was so much fun, and I highly recommend it to anyone who may be thinking of doing an off-road tri. I managed to come out of the water in good shape. Not too tired and feeling strong! On to my favourite set of trails. Fanshawe Lake is were I first started off road riding about 12 –13 yrs ago. The best part of racing here is that I was able to let go and take the course as fast as possible without worrying about running into any hikers. Had a great ride, and held on for the run. I did the majority of the race with a good friend Steve Whitmore. And I have to say that I am very pleased with the fact that he didn’t drop me on the bike because he is a much better mountain biker than I am.  Anyhow it was a great day and I hope to do it again this year.

Well it turns out June is a bad month for me…. Two days after the off-road tri, I was out running trails with Christain Gundlack and Pete Brooks. We were out in Komoka at night. Which normally isn’t a big deal. I’ve run trails for years and run them at night plenty of times. So I guess my time was up. I look at it like driving a car…. Eventually no matter how safe a driver you are, you’ll end up in a wreck. So about 1½ miles in, I roll my right ankle…. I limped for abit but then tried to settle into my rhythm again. Problem was that loud crack I heard…. Not sure if it was a stick, or my ankle… I could feel my ankle swelling up throughout the run but I knew we had to get back so I didn’t say anything to Christain or Pete till we were done. At that point, I knew the loud crack I heard wasn’t just a stick!! I told them that it was a great run and it will stick in my memory for a long time. Then I told them what had happened…. So I am done running for awhile. The thing that really sucked was that I couldn’t bike or swim either. It wasn’t till late July before I could get on my bike and start swimming.

Good thing about our summer here is that we have a 50m outdoor pool. I look forward all winter to it. So once I could swim I was there 4-5 days per week getting great swims in and working on my tan at the same time!!

So here I am. Able to swim, bike, and run. But I don’t have the time to do it anymore. My own training takes a back seat to my other responsibilities as a single parent. I get Sage out in the jogger every so often. But it isn’t quite the training I am used to. I have decided to channel my energy into my Massage Therapy practice and learning about parenthood. Which brings me pretty much up to date as to were I am today. I’ve written a little bit about it on other web sites, and plan to do more.

I will continue to coach and do the odd race here and there, with the hope that someday I will get back into serious racing at some point. But for now I will be focussing more on Massage Therapy. And I will also be doing little bit on how life goes as a single Dad. I’ll keep you informed.

Happy training to all!!

Shawn Reeder
