QUANTUM POWER CORES

History:

    The quantum power core is one of the many technologies provided by the Chystalians.  Although the origins of the technology are unknown at this time, the Chystalians began equipping their ships with these cores as early as 1915.  The cores operate on a similar principle to the Quantum Torpedoes in use by the federation in the 24th century.  Although both implementations rely on the creation of a large number of heavy subatomic particles to extract energy directly from the space-time continuum, the implementations are very different.  While the Quantum Torpedo relies on a matter/anti-matter explosion to create an eleven dimensional space time membrane (see the article at the DITL), the quantum power core uses a string of chrona-phasic quartz to control the transfer of subspace energies.

    Chrona-phasic quartz is a by-product of some of the biggest super-nova explosions, like the one that created the Sol system.  The quartz is temporally unstable by nature but can be contained inside a phased polaron field. By matching a control frequency to the crystals' carrier frequency, an energy bridge is created to extract 0-point energy from the appearing and disappearing particles. The carrier frequency is the relative size of the parent singularity's mass in relation to the universe  (the big bang would have a frequency of 0hz [the entire universe], the largest quasars would be at about 50 GHz,  the black hole at the center of our galaxy at 2500 GHz and the super nova that created our sun at 500 000 THz (500 thousand tetra-hertz).  The number of particles created (and thus the energy output) is equivalent to the frequency.  This means that the even the quartz attained from the core of the sun would have an output of only 4 or 5 sovereign-class warp cores.  However, by setting the control frequency to a multiple of the carrier frequency, the power output increases geometrically.

    Referring back, the crystals from our sun, with a control frequency of 5x10¹⁷ Hz create 5x10¹⁷ particles.  These same crystals with a control frequency of 1.5x10¹⁸ Hz (x3) create 6.35x10⁷⁰ particles, which can release more energy in one second than our sun produces in a year.  To produce less energy simply use a square-root of the carrier frequency which has a proportional effect on the energy output. 

Class 5 (primary):

    However, creating such high frequency polaron emissions is difficult and tricky, and the control offered by the geometrical progression is less than desirable.  Therefore, Chystalian scientists have found a way to sync the frequency of a string of chrona-phasic quartz with another singularity such as a black hole.  This lowers the carrier frequency and allows greater control.  For example:  the quantum singularity at the center of our galaxy produces 2.5x10¹⁵ particles at the same control frequency, while allowing peeks of up to 3.9x10⁶¹ at just 7.5x10¹⁵ Hz.  Further control can also be attained by applying a secondary control wave at ^[x root] of the main wave to dampen the effect by [^{(square-root of x)} root] of the regular output.  This method allows precise control of the core's output.  The most advanced class 5 core is located on the USS DESTINY and has been re-synced with the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

Class 4 (secondary):

    There is also a method by which one core can be synced with another to allow it to tap into the same energy level with better control (strength of control wave ³).  The re-synchronization process is very complex and takes several dozen exposures to energy blasts from the class 5 core.  Most systems on the USS DESTINY are powered by class 4 cores rather then power distributed through EPS conduits. 

Class 3 (raw):

    These are cores that have not been re-synced to allow for a lower carrier frequency.  As noted above, these cores are fairly useless.  A trans-metric torpedoes can be outfitted with class 3 cores for extremely high yields.

Class 2 (induced):

    In theory, any material can become chrona-phased.  A crystal of ordinary quartz can be induced with a set power capacity and discharge rate.  These cores can be created very quickly and are used in enhanced quantum torpedoes as the warhead.  They are also used to power trans-metric torpedoes and to start the sub-space chain reaction.

Class 1 (superstring):

    These are the systems used on old quantum torpedoes.  Very obsolete.
