SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE 36

Beauty and Health: If you're the type that thrives on beauty and health tips, this site will be a godsend to you. Not only do you get pointers on such things as choosing and using cosmetics and fashion accessories; you also get articles that seek to enlighten you on such major matters as waxing your legs as opposed to shaving, dealing with chin and facial hair, and the importance of patience for conception (no, it's not a joke!). The subjects are neatly listed on the left side of the page for fast selection and such features as the 'Research Conditions A-Z' search box and 'Beauty Recipes' will be endlessly useful to people who want to look and smell good all the time. The About.com site is an easy load and comes with a generous spread of hyperlinks.

The History Page: Anyone who wants a quick guide to history will be hard pressed to find a site that's better conceived than this. It has all the important facts presented in with the kind of punch, clarity and brevity lacking in most school history textbooks. There're four sections -- 'archaeology & antiquity (prehistory to 500 A.D.)', 'mediaeval & renaissance' (500 to 1500 A.D.), 'early modern' ('1500 to 1750 A.D.) and 'modern (1750 A.D. to today' -- which tell you the story of major events and the people behind them. But you can also get deeper into the subject through the 'directories & general reference' and 'historians and philosophers' links. Yes, the history may be somewhat potted but it's not often so intriguingly presented.

OJJDP: Parenting Resources for the 21st Century: A US site that "strives to help families meet the formidable challenges of raising a child today by addressing topics that include school violence, child development, home schooling, organized sports, child abuse, and the juvenile justice system". Many of the case studies and situations may not be relevant in a Malaysian context, but many of the points raised in the essays on topics like 'Delinquency', 'Gangs', 'Hate Crimes', 'Domestic Violence', 'Academic Failure', 'Child Abuse and Neglect' and 'Substance Abuse' are sure to open the eyes of parents and educators. It's a serious site with a simple, user-friendly design. And all the information is thoughtfully packed into the six main sections -- 'Child and Youth Development', 'Child Care and Education', 'Family Concerns', 'Family Dynamics, Health and Safety' and 'Out-of-School Activities'.

OnHealth: Another great site for those seeking the kind of info on health matters that they can't get from their neighbourhood GP. It's billed as "the #1 health site", and though that may sound like hype, the site does try to live up to the boast. There's a daily updated news slot and sections like 'Allergy Center', 'All in the Family' and 'Chats & Events' which tackle a broad range of topics. The right-hand database list includes 'Diseases & Conditions', 'Women', 'Baby', 'Alternative', 'Lifestyle' and 'Food & Fitness'. And the 'Toolbox' contains a 'Symptom Checker', 'Breast Self-Exam', 'Pregnancy Calender', among other useful features.

Perfect Sound Forever: Describing itself as an "online music magazine with warped perspectives", PSF offers offbeat music criticism that borders on the subversive. The best reviews are rudely opinionated and rip-roaringly individualistic; there're some real gems here for those who dig underground journalism. The '(Re)Printed Articles & Reviews' section has great pieces on Robert Wyatt and Mick Farren, and the interviews and career-reviews in 'Stories/Features' are excellent. Definitely a place for fans of indie rock and gonzo writing.

SPACE.com: Wanna watch videos of space shuttle landings, play astronomy quiz games and explore the marvels of the Milky Way through fabulous photos? Then this is the site you should fly to. The left frame has links to 'News', 'Missions/Launches', 'Search for Life', 'Science Fiction', 'People/Interviews', 'Reference' and 'Opinions/Columns'. The 'Mars: A Visual Feast' is also a spectacular treat... if your connection is fast. Lots of reports and stuff on space matters here for astronomy freaks and space buffs.
