The Kdam
The 1996 Kdam Eurovision song contest was a big failure by any mean. Firstly, for the low quality of the songs - untill this very day only few people
in Israel even know any song from that contest, and secondly becuase of the unsuccess of the winning song of this Kdam to even represent Israel in
the Eurovision Song Contest held that year in Oslo.
The Eurovision regulations for 1996 said that only 23 songs may compete in the final, and in order to lower the number of competing songs from 30
to 23, 7 songs will be relegated. a special committe was set in order to determind which countries will be relegated. On the 22nd of March the IBA
had been informed that Israel was among these 7 countries.
The presenters of the evening were the Israeli model and actress, Tal Man, and the radio broadcaster, Ron Levintal.
The contest was almost cancelled because of a terror attack that occured at the begining of that week, but it was eventually broadcast as planned.
Two Israeli citizents, who were injured in the attack, were interviewed during the show, a thing which brought a little sadness to the evening's proceedings.
The Kdam had been arranged differently this year with the bigger part of the evening being an entertainment show hosted by the presenters. The entertainment artists were "Bnot Pesia", four guys disguised as females, Miki Kam and the popular comedians, Gil Sasover and Itai Segev.
Tal man changed into five beautiful evening dresses during the evening, while Ron watched in enthusiasm.
The notable artists were Ilana Avital, her fourth performance on the "Kdam" stage, Izhar Cohen, winner of the 1978 and 1985 Kdams,
and Doron Mazar, a balad singer who had already unsuccesfully participated in the Kdam three times before.
The winning song
The winning song was sang by a tottaly unfamalier singer which the Kdam was her first apearance on television.
23 years old Galit Bell, who was an officer in the Israeli Defense Forces, made a very lively and catchy performance, but with a terrible song.
There is no doubt that her song "Shalom Olam" (Hello World) kept evryone's ears on the first play, but it was the best of the worse.
All the voting teams gave the song very high points and most of them gave her 12 or 10 points. This led her to a complete win with 70 points - 14 points
over the second position.
The music of the song was written by Galit's boy friend, Eyal Madani, who is also an officer in the Israeli army. Acording to the writer, the words of the song are supposed to be inspired by the murder of the late prime-minister Itzhak Rabin.
