Garbage formed in Madison Wisconsin in 1994. They got their name by a fellow musician saying that their music was "garbage". At first it was just the guys but then they saw Shirley singing Angelfish's "Suffocate Me" on MTV and they tracked her down to see how she would sound singing some of the songs they were working on. They took her up right away. Vig describes her voice as "sometimes scary, sometimes dreamy, sometimes sexy, sometimes psychotic."
