Trinidad Carnival 2003

These shots above are of 2 of our favorite Calypso singers. The first is the winner of the 2003 Monarch title, Singing Sandra, and you can see the theme of her song - the violence taking place in the streets and schools. The scene is about a recent incident of a teacher being stabbed in front of her students on Tobago. The second picture is Chalkdust, singing about a letter from a government leader that was published in some newspapers. My favorite song was his second performance of "Just So", a very touching one about the human condition.

These pictures are of the kids. The first 2 are from the winning Junior Band. The little boy is a banana tree and the girls in the second are cocoa plants. The red costume is one of the Junior Queen comptitiors and one of my favorites and the next is the winner of the Junior King's competition.

These are 2 of the finalists in the Queen's competition, and 2 of my favorites.

These were all finalists in the Kings' Mas competition. The top shots are the same costume (front and back) and the one we saw being built, called "Schizoid-the Agony of Ecstacy." I thought it was the best, but he got second place. The next is 'Blue Moon Visitor", then "Trouble in de Bamboo" (the real man is only up to the costume's crotch) and two with a Zulu warrior theme. Finally, the winner, called "De Sky is de Limit"; this picture doesn't do it justice - it was almost 30 feet tall and 25 feet wide and in the finals, he attached a laser light.

This is the winning Steel Orchestra for Panorama 2003, Exodus. This picture shows only about half of the band - I think there were about 150 players. The sound was fantastic.
