The Crew

This is us near Fort Napoleon on Iles des Saintes, about 10 miles south of Guadeloupe. That's the Soufriere Volcano on Guadeloupe in the background.
Diane
Diane has been sailing for about 19 years, or to put it another way, as long as she's known me (Larry). We started out sailing Star Class boats, since that what I had at the time, but the "lack of amenities" after we got married forced a
change. A Sabre 34 definitely has more comfortable accomodations than a Star.
She likes sailing, but likes "travel" better.
To prepare for the trip, she took several courses with Larry and also did a 600 mile trip from Annapolis to Maine with the Bluewater 600 Rally, spomsored by Nautech Enterprises and Bluewater Sailing Magazine.
Larry
I (Larry) have been sailing since I was 19. I started on a Sunfish on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire. That makes it about 31 years ago. I've sailed various boats; one-designs: Stars and Tempests; raced a Tartan 37, a Hunter 40; owned a Sabre 34 for 10 years; and now, a Nordic 44.
I did a delivery from Bermuda to New York several years ago on a friend's boat - that got me hooked on passagemaking.
As part of the preparations for the cruise, I took the following courses/seminars:
- April 2000 - Weather Analysis and Prediction, Nautech Enterprises
- March 2000 - Offshore Preparation, Nautech Enterprises
- January 2000 - Celestial Navigation, Ocean Navigator
- February 1999 - Tom and Mel Neale's Cruising School
- March 1998 - Coastal Navigation, Ocean Navigator
- January 1998 - Safety At Sea, US Sailing/Cruising World Magazine
- Miscellaneous seminars and talks at boatshows
