The Boat

Destiny is a Nordic 44, built in 1984. She was designed by Bob Perry, who has remarked that this is still one of his favorite designs (but maybe he says that about all his "babies").

The layout and dimensions of the Nordic 44 can be found here:

Systems/Equipment Reports

I have written these reports to share my experiences with certain pieces of gear. When I was preparing for this trip, I searched the web for other cruising web sites and besides enjoying the cruising stories themselves, found the equipment surveys or reports very helpful. Of course, their usefulness declines with age so I will try to keep these updated.

I'm not going to "slam" anyone but I will tell you what I think; if you want more details, email me. I had no idea what running my own "utility" company was like, i.e., making water, electricity, etc. - there are both benefits and challenges. Would I do things differently now - yes, but isn't experience everyone's teacher.

These are the reports so far:

This is a list of most of the preparations I did to get Destiny ready to leave long-term in the water at the marina in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.

In-water Boat Storage in the Tropics

We bought Destiny in late 1998 and kept her on Greenwich Bay, which is part of Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Living in New York made the commute to the boat every weekend very tiresome, but it is a beautiful place to cruise.

If you want to read about a family doing a circumnavigation in a N44, take a look at the Warm Winds Home page. You can also read several articles by them in Blue Water Sailing magazine, the first is in the July 2000 issue.

Here are some pictures of the boat taken on the hard and also at anchor that can give you some idea of her lines.

The first 2 shots are when the boat was on the hard at PowerBoats in Chaguaramas, Trinidad. The shot at anchor is from Petit St. Vincent.
