Venezuela 2004 - Trip Back to Puerto La Cruz

These were taken at the interesting archeological site at Chichiriviche, the 3200 year old indian rock carvings. The first is the site itself - Diane is talking to some tourists and you can see the growth of large mangroves. There was a small catwalk built over the water to get to the area. The cliff she is near has some of the carvings shown in the next shot. I don't know who said they were 3200 years old but why not?

These next three shots are from the Carenero area on the coast, about 70 miles further east from Chichiriviche. The first picture was taken in a small bay next to the port called Bahia de Buche and is a place for locals to go and relax. There were several restaurants on the beach which we tried - not bad. The second shot is Destiny anchored near the Carenero Yacht Club, a very nice club with excellent facilities, just not many sailboats. The last is Diane with a statue of Simon Bolivar in the main square of the town of Carenero. There's a square and statue like this one in almost every town in Venezuela.

These last photos were taken at various spots along the coast. The first was taken in the early morning - we had just passed La Guaira, where the Caracas Airport is located - and shows the huge mountains that come down right to the coast in many places. If you look at the center between the 2 peaks, you can see the outline of the Humbolt Hotel that we visited from Caracas last year. The next shot is Isla La Borracha with the omnipresent oil tanker; we're within 5 miles of PLC. The last is El Morro, the large mass of land that juts out and creates a large bay just in front of PLC. We were almost there.
