Martinique

Where is Martinique

Martinique is about 27 miles south of Dominica. The passage here was pretty rough with 20 to 25 knots and gusting higher. While it was a reach, it was very uncomfortable with 7 to 9 foot seas. The lee didn't help at first because of the cape effect of wind and waves bending around large headlands. Eventually, it calmed down and we had to motor an hour to St. Pierre. This is also the first of the Windward Islands, so called because the British had to sail to windward from their other possessions to get there.

We arrived on April 20 and toured the town of St. Pierre and the ruins of the city from the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelee.

We went to several places here - St.Pierre, Anse Mitan, Anse Noire (very briefly), Grande Anse d'Arlet, Marin and St. Anne. We left St. Anne on May 18 (to soon, as we liked it there), bound for St. Lucia.

Well, we did come back in 2001-2002 and stayed in Ste. Anne from December 22 through January 8. We were in the Marin marina again until February 9 and then went back to the anchorage in Ste. Anne. We finally left Ste. Anne headed south on March 18. I started missing the fresh baguettes, cheese and good wine on the 19th!
