Diane's Diary

Grenada - Part 5

7/19 Thursday

Larry rebedded a leaking chain plate. He had rebedded them before we left NY but it started leaking again. Steve from Kristali came over with some suggestions as how to redo it. In the meantime I cooked 2 eggplants that I had bought on our excursion yesterday. Finally, we can have eggplant parm with real mozerralla cheese. What a treat! I also made some brownies. I took one of our last steaks out of the freezer tonight but unfortunately it was bad weather out so we could not bar-b-que. We hardly have gotten to use the bar-b-que at all as it's either too windy or rainy. We had an early dinner for a change. Then, we watched the movie " What Lies Beneath" that Pride lent us. It was a good scary movie. It's been a while since we have watched TV. In the beginning, I missed TV but now I hardly miss it at all. I usually read at night & Larry works on the computer. There was very little wind today & it was very hot on the boat. As long as we get a little bit of wind, the heat is bearable otherwise it's very uncomfortable.

7/20 Friday

I went into town with Ruth from Legacy. Larry needed me to get some boat parts & I needed to do some shopping. We went to Island Waterworld to get the stuff Larry needed. Naturally, they didn't have what he wanted so I bought other stuff. Fortunately, we went to Ace Hardware after that & they had what Larry wanted. So, I had to go back to return the stuff to Island Waterworld. We took the city bus to CK's supermarket- a small version of Costco. If you bought items in bulk the price was cheaper than if you bought an individual item. Fortunately, we were able to split a lot of things so we were able to buy in bulk. CK's delivers for free too so that was a big bonus. We each bought 3 1.75 liter size bottles of Mt.Gay rum. We seem to go through this stuff like it was water! The cheapest place to buy rum was definitely St. Marten, followed by Petit Martinque, Carricou & Grenada. In St. Lucia we bought the local Bounty rum & it wasn't bad but Mt. Gay is better. Anyway, in Carricou we paid 37 EC for the 1.75 ltr (less than $14 USD). In most of the supermarkets in Grenada the same bottle is 51-54 EC- over $19 bottle. Since we bought 3 bottles each we paid 46EC each- about $17 bottle. Wish we had bought more rum sooner. We heard the prices of rum in Trinidad were high also. We were going to walk back to the Spiceland supermarket but some nice lady offered us a lift. We were grateful as it was very hot out. The people of Grenada are definitely friendlier than the other islands we have visited.

We ate pizza in the mall - not bad at all! Maria's pizza it isn't but it's edible. We went food shopping & took the 1pm bus back. I put away all the food. Ruthie & I dinghied to all the other boats to check what they were bringing for the Mexican party we are having on Ruthie's boat Legacy Saturday night. We didn't want to call everyone over the VHF because she obviously couldn't invite everyone & we didn't want anyone's feelings to be hurt. Then, we had to go to the dock to wait for CK to deliver the food. They said delivery would be between 3-5 & they came at 4. I took a shower & met Larry at the Moorings bar for their Friday night bar-b-que. We stayed for drinks but went home for dinner since I had made all that eggplant parm.

7/21 Saturday

I made some turkey enchiladas for the Mexican party tonight. Then, I wrote some emails & updated my logs. We went swimming & took showers at 3pm. The Mexican party started on Legacy around 5:30pm with about 22 people attending. We all bought a dish & BYOB. We all had a great time & didn't get home till 10pm. Luckily, our boat is located right next to theirs so we didn't have far to go.

7/22 Sunday

This morning I made sour cream corn muffins that were excellent. I also made some appetizers for tonight. We are having S/V Jacobite & Lady M III for drinks. I wrote some emails & updated my logs. We went swimming & took showers at 3pm. Our company came at 5:30 & stayed till around 7pm. We enjoyed having them over. It was really hot again today as their was no wind.

7/23 Monday

It was hot again today with almost no wind. It rained until 10:30am. I read until it stopped raining. I wasn't feeling well this morning- I had a cold. Turns out I found out others were sick also. Anyway, it's the first time I have even been remotely sick out here. I took a cold pill & read in bed until 10:30 & felt better.

I called Ruthie from Legacy & asked her if she wanted to walk over to the American Embassy with me. We needed to get extra pages put in our passports before we leave here. She said she would go for the walk so off we went. The embassy was closed at 11:30- 1:30 for lunch & they wanted us to come back for the passports. It was a hot walk over there & I didn't want to walk back here again. We were very lucky & they did it while we waited. Interesting enough, it was the Grenada police who guarded the embassy & not the US marines as usual. We asked why there were no Marines & the guards told us it's because they don't have any problems in Grenada. I was surprised as I thought all American embassy's were guarded by US military personnel- especially with recent terrorist attacks.

We also stopped by the North- South wholesale wine store as recommended in the Doyle cruising guide. The prices were high & I wasn't very impressed. Most of the places he recommends in his guidebook advertise in it, so, naturally the book is slanted towards the places that advertise with him. We were very fortunate to get a ride back to Secret Harbor with one of the locals, Nancy, who lives here 6 months out of the year. We had passed her house on one of our walks- solamante de vida- an absolutely gorgeous house. She lives here for 6 months out of the year & 6 months in Baja CA. What a life - it must be nice to have money! She invited us to stop by anytime to see the house. I would love to see it- it is absolutely gorgeous!

We watched another video we borrowed from another boat- "What Woman Want". It was funny & we both enjoyed it. We all swap everything out here- books, magazines, boat parts & tools. We really depend on all the other cruisers & everyone pitches out with everything. The word "selfish" doesn't exist out here. All the cruisers seem willing to help each other with their knowledge. It's something you'll probably never find elsewhere in life. It's probably the best thing I like about cruising - the camaraderie is fantastic.
