Diane's Diary

Grenada - Part 7

7/29 Sunday

The oven was not holding its temperature so Larry cleaned it out this morning. Hopefully, that solved the problem as I made a baked ziti to pop in the oven later. Kristali stopped by to give us some pictures of the raftup. We probably won't see them for a while now but hopefully will be able to catch up with them in the future. Larry checked the engine & tightened the rigging. I caught up on all my logs. At 4pm we went swimming & to the showers.

Cleaning the stove didn't solve the problem so we spoke to Kristali & Akali on it. Turns out we could just be low enough on propane that the stove works but there's not enough pressure for the oven. Since propane is much cheaper in Trinidad than Grenada- $20USD vs $6USD I guess we'll wait until we reach Trinidad in a few days.

7/30 Monday

We're going to leave for Trinidad tonight so we spent the day getting the boat ready for transit. Wednesday is a holiday in Trinidad so if we don't leave tonight we will have to wait until Wednesday night. Trinidad charges high overtime charges- approximately $50 USD so we definitely don't want to pay that. Normal charges are about $8USD. It should take around 14 hours to arrive so since we want to make a daylight arrival we'll leave here at night. We got a good weather forecast so there's a bunch of other boats going also.

We have not cleaned the boat bottom since we got to Grenada so I went overboard to clean it. The water was very murky & visibility very limited. There's was also small biting shrimp in the water so I put my wet suit on so I wouldn't get bit. The growth was pretty bad & it took me several hours. Larry tried to assemble the windvane but he couldn't get it working because he needed some brackets to hold the blocks. I think the windvane was not necessary & if we had to do it over again wouldn't buy it. The autopilot has worked great except it uses a lot of electricity. We haven't used the windvane at all.

Kristali came over to return some videos they had borrowed. We probably won't see them for a few weeks at least. We will miss them. Larry cleaned the anchor chain- it really needed to be cleaned.

We cleared out of customs at 3pm, took quick showers & got back on the boat before 4pm. We still had to hoist the dinghy on deck, take off the engine & do some last minute boat preparation. We listened to the 4:30pm weather & it still sounded good to leave tonight so at 5pm we pulled up the anchor & set off. Driftwood, Amphitrite & about 6 other boats were also making the passage.
