Guadeloupe - Part 3

4/13 Friday

More boat chores- I finished waxing the deck. Larry worked on other maintenance issues.

4/14 Saturday

We actually left the marina today after 10 nights. Mima left at 8am but we couldn't leave until 9am because of the tide. Mima said they only had 7.2 feet of water in the marina channel so we waited so we wouldn't go aground. We did briefly touch ground but Larry was able to get us off very quickly. Also, the entrance was tricky as some of the rocks from the jetty had fallen into the channel from one of the hurricanes. I stood on the bow directing Larry & we were out of the channel with no problem. We motored to the Saintes as it was only around 10 miles. We were anchored near Mima & were anchored by 11:30am. We relaxed on the boat & all went into town around 3pm.

We really enjoyed the town- the width of Main street was about as large as a car!!! There aren't any car rentals on the islands so instead they have motor bikes- these are everywhere!!! We enjoyed walking around & seeing all the stores. Unfortunately, since it's a long holiday weekend in Guadeloupe, the island is much more crowded than normal. It's a typical day tourist island- much like Martha's Vineyard. Tourists take the ferry over for the day & leave by 5pm. The island gets much quieter & more enjoyable after they leave. We had the best ice cream of this whole trip-$1.50 US for 2 scoops of homemade ice cream. Think we'll have one every day!!!

4/15 Easter Sunday

Today is Easter Sunday. It's very strange not to be home for the holidays. I miss my family. Phone calls home are difficult to make (especially in the French islands where I don't speak the language!) & are expensive so we don't make them too often. I was thinking of all of them today though. Today Larry, Stefanie (from Mima), & I walked up to Fort Napelon. There was no breeze blowing & it was very hot. It took 30 minutes to climb straight uphill. It wasn't a hard hike but just hot. The views from the top were fantastic. We had a clear day & could see Guadeloupe & Dominica. We saw lots of huge iguanas. Think we'll have a few good ones for the website!

Afterward, we met Tom (Stephanie's husband) for lunch & had pizza at Solo Mio restaurant overlooking the water. It was a beautiful view but at $25USD for 2 people for a pizza lunch, it was too expensive. We got a terrific ice cream after lunch- a huge homemade cone & ice cream with 2 scoops for less than $2USD. It was great. Afterwards, we went back to our boat & relaxed. We were going to go snorkeling but were just too tired. The heat certainly takes a lot out of you.

4/16 Monday

Mima left today but we decided to stay one more day & do some snorkeling. They have a dog onboard so can only go to the French islands. The former British islands do not allow pets ashore. I cooked up all the veal today so it would be all made. We will have enough for at least 6 meals. Larry worked on a problem with the watermaker he was able to fix. In the afternoon we went snorkeling near the Pan de Sucre anchorage. The snorkeling wasn't the best we have seen but we still enjoyed it. The anchorage was beautiful except it would be a long dinghy ride into town. The anchorage was very crowded because of the holiday. Les Saintes is a very busy tourist town.
