St. Martin - Part 8

3/5 Monday

We spent the day trying to recover- we were both pretty exhausted. We got our haircuts by another cruiser & she did a great job. $20 for 2 haircuts. We cleared out of St. Martin, got diesel & generally took it easy. We had thought of going today but were just too exhausted.

3/6 Tuesday

We had an extremely busy today trying to get ready to leave tonight. My cousins are coming to Antigua on Thursday so we can leave as late as Wednesday but that would give us no time to rest when they came. It will take approximately 15 hours to get there. Since we always arrive at an anchorage in daylight that means we need to leave St. Martin at night. We decide to go tonight on the 5:30pm bridge.

We had to clean the bottom of the dinghy since we were pulling it up on deck. The bottom was disgusting- the lagoon is really very dirty. We now have speckles from the barnacles on the bottom of the dinghy that we can't get out yet. We'll have to try some other cleaning products when we get the chance.

I took the bus to Marigot to get our favorite cheeses & pastries & to the Food Center. By the time I got back I was exhausted. But I still had to put all the provisions away & help Larry put the dinghy on deck. We were going to wait until we got through the bridge to raise the dinghy if we didn't have time to store it before the 5:30 bridge but we were able to get it up on deck before we left. It turns out that it was very rolly in the Bay & we would have not been able to get it up on deck. We would have had to tow the dinghy & that would have increased the risk that it might break free. The wind started out right on our nose & the boat was rolling. Fortunately, the wind calmed down & we wound up motoring the entire way. We were both exhausted anyway so it was just as well. Next time we will rest the day we have to do an overnight passage. Larry did the first shift & I came on at 12. I tried to sleep in the cockpit as it was really hot below with all the windows closed plus I was a little nauseous from the uncomfortable boat motion. But I couldn't sleep a wink even though I was exhausted I only stayed on watch for 2 hours when I had to ask Larry to come on watch as I was falling asleep. He was on watch till 3 & I took over from 3-6- this time I got a second wind from a little rest in the cockpit & was able to stay awake. When he relieved me at 6 I went downstairs to get a little sleep, as I still did not feel rested. We arrived in Jolly Harbor, Antigua at 10am so it took us 16 hours. So, now we are in Antigua. To be continued...
