Diane's Diary

Trinidad - Part 5

8/21 Tuesday

Steph came over from 9-11 so we could speak with her broker in FL - this broker still works for her. Tom & Steph sold their stock brokerage firm to do this trip. I sewed for a few more hours with Tom's sewing machine- luckily, it sews canvas so I am making sunbrella covers for the jerry jugs & fender covers. I also need to reinforce the stitching on the bimini & make handrail covers. In the afternoon, I walked on the treadmill, swam & took a shower. John from Sojourn came over for dinner tonight- he's leaving back for the US tomorrow & we will watch his boat while he is gone. We are also watching the boat Island Spirit in the slip adjacent to ours. I made my famous penne a la vodka although I didn't have the proper ingredients it still came out good- at least I think it was good!

8/22 Wednesday

More sewing today. I get frustrated with the machine so I only do a few hours per day. It's different than the machine I have at home, is difficult to thread & make bobbins but is still worthwhile to have a machine that sews canvas. We met Chris on Romany Life, a singlehander on an almost new Hylas 54. Beautiful boat. He is a hotshot black guy who owned a media company, someone bought him out & he made a fortune. Unfortunately, he also had a very large ego. We invited him to come out with us to Joe's Pizza tonight. We went to Joe's Pizza with Mima, Just Dessert & Chris. Afterwards, Larry & I drove him back in our dinghy & he invited us in for a drink & to see the boat. It was a gorgeous boat but I little to big for me.

8/23 Thursday

I went food shopping with the free bus this morning to get my shoes back that I had left with the shoemaker. This afternoon, I did some more sewing. I also made a key lime pie to take to the weekly potluck party at the marina. I only had time to swim for a few minutes. We invited Great White Wonder to come to our weekly potluck- only about 20 people showed up this week. Usually it's much more crowded but apparently a lot of cruisers have gone home for a while. We stayed at the potluck until 8 & then came back to the boat. We watched some TV & went to bed by 10pm.

8/24 Friday

Larry went into Port of Spain today with Mima & Second Tri to get Mima's stove they ordered from the US. Tom had hurt his leg & was unable to do the get the stove himself. Also, the stove was too heavy for one person to left. Unfortunately, after they went to the doctor & made a few other stops & filled out the paperwork it was too late at 3pm to get the stove. They have to come back on Monday! I stayed on the boat, did some emails, 2 loads of laundry & waited for Calypso Canvas to come. I did some more sewing from 1-4pm. I completed the canvas covers for the 3 fenders & 4 jerry jugs- now I'm onto doing the handrails. I'm lucky Mima hasn't left yet & am able to use their machine. Tom gave me some premade bobbins & that has really made the process go a lot faster. I also finished reinforcing the bimini stitching. I made some spaghetti with real meatballs. The canned meat I have is good but the meat can't be shaped into real meatballs. We lost the electricity on the boat from around 4 -7pm, the boat got hot really fast without the AC on. We have also lost the cable TV for the past day. We went to bed early tonight- around 9pm.

8/25 Saturday

I went to the fruit & veg market at 6:30 this morning. I bought 8 lbs of medium - large shrimp at about $4 lb. I bought a lot of shrimp as this is the end of the shrimp season. I also bought corn on the cob at 5 for $1USD (not great though),4 cucumbers & 2 big eggplant for $1USD, anthurium flowers for 41.50USD, 1lb of string beans for about .35USD, 2 very small heads of lettuce for about.75USD 7 fresh tuna for $1USD per lb. I got back to the boat around 9am. Larry wasn't here - he went to pick up the woodworking store, we had custom made spice racks, magazine racks, TV stand, & shelves for the closet. He got back around 10:30 & we went to the movies with S/V Black Cat, Great White Wonder, and Second Tri. We went to a double feature & saw Evolution & the new Planet of the Apes movie for $2USD. A small bag of popcorn & a 20oz diet coke was $1USD! It was a bargain & we all really enjoyed ourselves. We all said we would have to make this a weekly treat. Afterwards, we took the bus to West Mall- similar to a mall in the US- & had a late lunch/early dinner. We got back to the boat around 6pm & were too full to eat dinner. Larry helped me clean the shrimp - with the 2 of us working it took about 1.5 hours.

8/26 Sunday

Our dock neighbor lent us his bike while he is away as long as we watch his boat. I took the bike over to the seamstress this morning. Larry had brought my sewing back yesterday but the work was not done properly so I had to return it. I stopped at Mima & came back to the boat around 12. We had lunch & I sewed from 1-4 reinforcing the stitching on the bimini. I also started working on the handrail covers. I went around looking at other boats in our marina to see how other people did the sewing on their boat. At 4:30, Mima, Just Dessert & Second Tri came over to our marina to go swimming. Larry, Second Tri & Just Dessert sat around working on Just Dessert'scomputer & drinking. Unfortunately, Larry couldn't fix it. Mike had brought over a bottle of Venezuelan rum- pretty good & only $3USD per bottle! Looks like we're going to have to get some when we go to Venezuela. The ladies had a drink too but the guys had polished off most of the bottle. Since we all weren't in the mood to cook, we were going to go to Joe's Pizza for dinner. However, most places are closed on Sundays so we had to go to the only other restaurant open- Crews Inn. We had hamburgers & fries but nothing to drink & it was still almost $20. plus, the burgers weren't near as good as TGIF & the service was lousy.

8/27 Monday

Larry & Jack from Second Tri went into Port of Spain today with Tom to get Mimas' stove. Since Tom hurt his leg, he wasn't able to pick up the stove. It took almost the full day to pick it up with all the running around they had to do at the port. Mima treated them to lunch for helping out. Ironically, it only took less than an hour to put in the new stove. Dawn from Just Dessert & I went into Port of Spain. I bought some more material. We went to TGIF for lunch. We walked to TGIF & all over Port of Spain so when we got back I was exhausted. BTW, fabric is very cheap here - most of the material I like is around $3/yd. It's really nice to get custom made clothes. Just as I got back to the boat, Steph came over with the rental car. She drove me over to the seamstress to let off my material & also to the woodworking shop to pick up our items but they had some problems so we had to leave them there.
