Diane's Diary
Venezuela 2004 - Part 10
April 10 Saturday
We are trying to eat all our food up as we don't want to have leftovers or we will have to give them away. Larry took the doors off the kitchen and bathroom, took the spice racks down etc. in anticipation of Elias finishing the galley while we are gone. It really would be impossible for him to do the galley while we are living on the boat.
Anyway, we started packing to leave this afternoon. We had to find where everything is. We haven't worn shoes or long pants in a long time other than going to Caracas.
April 11 Sunday Easter Sunday
Well, since we had such a bad time at Christmas when we were by ourselves I was determined this wouldn't happen at the next holiday. So, we made arrangements to go to Maremares for their Sunday brunch with Happy Hours and Plenum. We thought it would be crowded with lots of people but there was hardly anyone. Maybe it is because the price at $20 for two people is too steep but I don't know. Anyway, we had a very nice time. I had a red rash on my leg that I just noticed - Happy Hours said they thought was ringworm so I was definitely very upset about this. Sherry on S/V Lorelei is a nurse so when we got back to the boat I asked her and sure enough she confirmed it. Don't know where I picked it up- you can get it from animals, other people, showers so who knows? I do suspect the animals as they are probably all sick with lots of different diseases and I have been feeding and petting them. Anyway, we got lots of unlimited champagne as the waitress remembered us from the last time when we had left her a big tip. We gave her a very good tip this time also. We all had a very good time and I was glad we got to celebrate the day we other people. Christmas was just very depressing when we were by ourselves.
April 12 Monday
We spent a busy last day in PLC as we are taking the bus to Caracas tomorrow. I called the hotel to verify our reservation. I also called Giulio- he will pick us up from the bus station tomorrow. I also called AA to confirm our flights. International flights are supposed to be reconfirmed 24 hours ahead. Larry tried calling Eric again. He still hasn't been in touch with him but Eric did say several weeks ago that he would pick him up in Sacramento. Larry tried getting a flight into San Francisco but because AA doesn't fly to Redding he would have had to pay for this portion. We would have done that except the fare would have been over $300- ridiculous!
I had some words with Nancy on Texas Reb this morning and did NOT appreciate the way she acted! We haven't been too friendly with them at all since we came into PLC and after this incident; I certainly don't plan on staying in touch or being friendly with them!
Anyway, I cleaned out the refrigerator, as we will turn it off while we are gone so Elias can varnish it. Happy Hours was nice enough to take some of our food while we were gone. I also went to Plaza Mayor to get some medication for the ringworm. It certainly will be a lot cheaper here than the US. Sherry was nice enough to write out what I should get and how to apply it. The infection was also listed in our medical book so both really helped. It's not that serious and fortunately I only have one small rash.
Larry and Elias removed the stove and boy, was it ever filthy! I never clean back there, as the stove has to be moved so it's not easy to do. Anyway, I cleaned the stove and the area where the stove goes. I also cleaned out all the cabinets in the galley as all the food had to be removed so the area could be varnished.
Larry was doing a whole bunch of other things on the boat and we both finally finished at 5pm. We had a drink, took a shower and met Plenum for dinner at the restaurant for dinner. I had the chicken Cesar salad that was very good.
April 13 Tuesday
Well, we did some last minute preparation for leaving this morning. I gave away the food we didn't finish to the guards and turned the refrigerator off. We got to the bus station at 10:30 even though the bus wasn't until 11:30 as we had anticipated a large crowd. Sure enough, there were absolutely no seats left on the bus so I am so happy I bought them a week ago or we wouldn't have gotten on. We had an uneventful trip to Caracas. Giulio picked us up from the bus station and brought us to the hotel to check in. After we drove over to TGIF for dinner. It was really nice to see him again.
We got back to the room at 9pm and Larry had to be up at 3am. His flight was at 7am, and he left the hotel at 4am. I helped him take the suitcases down and tried to go back to sleep afterwards but couldn't. I just watched TV for a while and tried to sleep but didn't.
April 14 Wednesday
I finally got up around 8am as I couldn't sleep any longer. I was still very tired but just couldn't sleep. I inadvertently left all the medication I was bringing home at the boat so I went to buy some more. I went to breakfast next door at the little bakery. Generally, I just walked around for a little while. I went to the park directly behind the hotel as I had heard it was part of the old US Embassy grounds. They were absolutely beautiful with wonderful grounds and flowers. I walked over to a small mall and went to lunch at McDonalds. After I went back to the hotel and laid down for a while and took a small nap. I had a take out dinner from a nearby chicken restaurant but got diarrhea shortly afterwards so think something was not good with the food. I did walk over to the supermarket and bought some beers and bottled water for the airport. I just stayed in the hotel at night watching TV. I leave tomorrow for NY.
