Larry's Log
Grenada - Part 2
The next day, we took the mini-van again and Diane and a group of "ladies" went shopping at a very new shopping mall that had a big, American style supermarket. They were thrilled to find US products in a beautiful, big and clean market. Diane only bought about $90 worth of groceries since the prices were high. Steve and Mike from Kristali and I went on into St. George's to stop at a chandlery and hardware store. After our shopping, we walked around the town and I stopped at the Internet place again to correct some things on the web site. After that, we walked a bit more and then went back to the Nutmeg Restaurant where we ate lunch before catching the van back. On the way back, we picked up the ladies from their shopping and continued on to the marina.
That afternoon, Diane and Nancy from Footloose complained about their lunch since it was upsetting their stomachs. They had eaten at a Kentucky Fried Chicken and they all said it wasn't very good. Oh well. We had to cancel some plans to have John and Bridget from Gabrielle over because Diane wasn't feeling well. We did go back into shore to use the pool again though. Lori from Pride joined us and we gave her a ride back to the boat after. As we were dropping her off, she and Bob invited us aboard for a drink. Well, twist my arm. OK.
Diane was feeling better so we climbed aboard and talked and drank for a couple of hours. We enjoyed talking to them, as we had not really had the chance before although we had shared several anchorages over the last few weeks.
The next morning we heard that the tropical depression had been downgraded to a tropical wave, fortunately, but was now forecast to arrive that night. We had no real major preparations to make since we were already pretty secure in the anchorage. It rained that morning but them cleared up a bit so after running the engine to charge the batteries and running the water maker, we went to shore and walked over to Prickly Bay. Ron and Lena from Jacobite were staying in a hotel while their boat was "on the hard" for bottom painting. They had invited some people to come over as their guests to use the pool and that day Kristali and us accepted. We walked over at around 2pm and enjoyed the pool and the company. The Rendezvous Resort was very pretty and was right on Prickly Bay about 2 minutes by dinghy to the Spice Island Marina where Ron's boat was hauled. During our visit, Connie cut my hair. She had been cutting Steve's and Mike's hair and did a nice job. She had brought her scissors and comb because Diane had asked to her to trim her bangs. Since Diane had been after me to get my hair cut (too shaggy she said) I finally broke down and Connie kindly agreed. Its now shorter than I've ever had it in recent memory, but I think I like it that way - its easier anyway. It was last cut in St. Maarten back in early March.
We left at around 4pm so we could take showers and then go to the Happy Hour at the Secret Harbour Marina's bar. We met some old friends there and people we hadn't seen in some time, Benta and Tony from Side By Side, who we had last seen in St. Maarten. They had hurried down and were staying in the marina while we were anchored in the bay. It was really nice to see them again. We also met some people who had been to the Venezuela offshore islands and Bonaire, who raved about them. They said Bonaire was better than the Tobago Cays for snorkeling. Wow! Diane asked the question of how to get back against the Trades and the current and they said some people sail north to the Virgins or Puerto Rico but they sailed to Martinique. It was a beat to windward taking 6 days but they said the trip wasn't really too bad. We would have to think about it some more. There was a barbeque at the marina that night but Diane had made Chicken Parmesan (with real mozzarella cheese that she had gotten the day before) and so we ate on the boat. Very good!
Saturday, I stayed on the boat in the morning while Diane went walking with some of the other women cruisers. She came back around noon and we went to the pool at about 3. We were going to have some people over for drinks but the list escalated and got confused until there were over 12 people. Well, Destiny is not the place to comfortably have 6 people over much less 12, so Diane and Lori, from Pride, figured that maybe Legacy might do it. Diane volunteered to ask but Joe just happened to be going to shore and she waved him over. She wasn't quite sure how to phrase the question but he caught on pretty quickly and said sure. OK, party on Legacy tonight! After Joe left, I told Diane that she should tell Ruth what Joe had just agreed to, but she said Joe would do it when he got back. This was at around 2pm.
We got ready to go to the pool at 3 and saw that Joe had just gotten back from shore so I told Diane we should go over and make sure everything is still OK. As we got there, Joe was stepping on the boat and told Ruth. She laughed and called to us that it was fine. So, we went to the pool and met everyone back at Legacy at 5:30. We all had a great time and stayed until about 9 (past our bedtime!).
The next morning Diane wanted to go walking with the ladies again so I stayed on the boat and worked on the web site. I was going to start fixing the leak I had noticed on one of the chainplates but it looked like it might rain again so I didn't start that project. As it turned out, it didn't rain at all but it was a bit cloudy. Anyway, after working on the site and creating some new pages, I called Eric on Driftwood to come over and have some "refreshment." He came over and we talked until Diane came home around noon. Eric then went back to his boat and we had some lunch and talked about what we were going to do as far as when to leave for Trinidad. We like Grenada but I think it will be time to leave in 2 weeks or so. In the meantime, we have scheduled a tour of the island and have some more things to see in St. George's.
That evening, we had Forest and Susan, from Rejoice, over for snacks and drinks. We hadn't seen them since Bermuda and they've been ahead of us all along, but we finally caught up. We had been in touch over the SSB (long range radio) and via email but it's not the same as talking to someone face to face. Forest had tried to help me get my SSB problem straightened out back when I first installed it. They are both great people and we enjoyed the reunion tremendously.
