Here I've started a yellow ring, doing 5 doublestitches. At this point I would do a picot, but I want to join this ring to the first, so instead I will stitch into the
last picot of the previous ring.
Note the ring thread on my left index finger. |
Lay the last picot of the first ring OVER the ring thread on the index finger. |
Insert the spike of the working shuttle (or a crochet hook) into the picot, and pull up the thread from behind. |
Without removing the spike from the loop, simply slide the shuttle through the loop you have pulled up. |
The shuttle has gone completely through the loop you have pulled up. DO not pull the shuttle thread all the way tight |
Instead, pull the loops BACK through the picot but pulling your left pinky, or just tug on the ring thread. |
Close-up... Slowly pull the ring thread to it's original position. |
It is hard to see, but all the threads making up the join are on top of the picot - do not pull the join back through to the back of the picot.
This join counts as the first half of the double stitch. |
Do the second half of the double stitch, and the join is anchored into position. It should slide on the ring thread like any double stitch...Make sure. |
Here I have completed the second ring. In notation, a join is indictated by a "+", so this tatting would read:
CH 5-5. RW.
R 5-5-5-5 Cl. RW.
CH 5-5. RW.
R 5+5-5-5 Cl. RW.
Go ahead and reverse the work and tat a chain of 5-5 to get ready for a shuttle join. |
