![]() ![]() Welcome to Jen's Tat-ra Sutra!![]() Welcome to my Tatting Website!! My page is called Tat-ra Sutra, and it is dedicated to the love and learning of tatting. The etymology of sutra is Sanskrit - literally meaning thread; akin to Latin suere to sew. Pretty appropriate, huh? Tatra-Sutra is the feeling you get when you pick up a shuttle and some thread, and create something of beauty, and I encourage you to try it! This site is for beginners, although if you consider yourself an advanced tatter, I'm sure you'll still find it worth your time! I don't think I'll ever say I am an advanced tatter, because I always learn something new about it, so I'll never know it all. I am comfortable with the quality of my tatting, which improves with every project, and I love what I make, and that is enough for me! Tatting is a type of knotwork, and it is also called Shuttle Lace. I've heard the knot is similar to that of macrame, I'm not sure. Using either a shuttle, a needle, or even just your hands, the thread is knotted repeatedly to create a piece of lace. There is only one type of knot used, but the amount of space between the knots is what creates the laciness. The space between two knots is called a picot. There are some variations on the basic knot, and there are a couple of other techniques, but with the basic tatting "double stitch", and knowing how to do rings and chains, you can make a heck of a doily!
